GEORGE ALEXANDER
Majolica Inspired Ceramic Sculpture
George Alexander’s ceramics are unique artistic expressions rooted in the tradition of Italian Majolica. Richly glazed in a myriad of gloss and matte finishes, his unique interpretations are kindled by artistic influences as diverse as Japanese and Persian textiles, impressionist painting and primitive and tribal pottery.
Working with these contrasts and balances, George’s work is fused with the glossy sophistication of European traditions yet still contains the raw and essential elements of his medium. The ceramic art of George Alexander is a narration celebrating life’s vitality; imbued with a sophisticated wit and humor it reflects both the beauty and integrity of it’s subject and the clay.
George Alexander was born in 1940 in Picayune, Mississippi, a rural town northeast of New Orleans, Louisiana. He pursued his desire to become an artist in college, receiving an MFA from the University of Mississippi in 1969 and continued study at the Estudio General Luliana in Mallorca, Spain and the University of Valencia in Valencia, Spain.
In 1987 George left teaching to concentrate on his art and now living in the Husdon River Valley. His work is highly prized by a continuely growing body of collectors in the United States and Europe.
George Alexander’s ceramics are crafted in a stoneware sculpture body that he developed after years of experimentation. He is uniquely adept in translating the constraints of specifications into highly original work that maintains his artistic vision.
